DIY Hydrogen Peroxide Countertop Disinfectant Spray

A clean, effective, and toxin free alternative to store-bought surface sprays.

Why choose hydrogen peroxide?

Most conventional household disinfectants contain harsh chemicals like ammonia, synthetic fragrances, and preservatives that can irritate the skin, lungs, and eyes.

Many also contain endocrine disruptors like phthalates and parabens, which have been linked to hormone disruption and other health concerns—especially for children and pets.

Hydrogen peroxide, on the other hand, is a safe, biodegradable disinfectant. It breaks down into oxygen and water, leaving no toxic residue behind. When used correctly, it kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, and mold spores effectively—without the chemical overload.

This DIY spray uses 3% hydrogen peroxide and optional essential oils to create a natural, non-toxic cleaner that’s just as effective as most store-bought products—minus the fumes and environmental footprint.

Ingredients

• 1 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide. (Do not dilute)

• 20-30 drops essential oil (be mindful that some essential oils are toxic for pets and unsafe for pregnant & breastfeeding women.).

• 1 dark-colored spray bottle ( hydrogen peroxide breaks down in light).

Assembly Steps

  1. Pour 1 cup of undiluted 3% hydrogen peroxide into your spray bottle.
  2. Add 20-30 drops off essential oil .
  3. Secure the spray top and gently shake to combine.
  4. Label your bottle cleaner

How to use

Spray directly onto countertops or other non-porous surfaces. Let sit for at least 1 minute to disinfect. For deep sanitization, let sit for up to 10 minutes. Wipe clean with a cloth or paper towel.

This spray is ideal for:

Kitchen counters (granite, quartz, stainless steel) Bathroom sinks and toilet seats High-touch areas like doorknobs and light switches

Why this works

Hydrogen peroxide is a natural oxidizer that destroys the cell walls of germs. It’s recognized by the CDC and EPA as an effective disinfectant when used properly—without adding unnecessary synthetic ingredients to your home environment.
