What’s in Season

Okinawa’s Monthly Guide to Local Produce

Shopping seasonally in Okinawa means fresher flavors, better prices, and more nutrient-packed meals. Whether you’re at a farmer’s market or a grocery store, here’s a breakdown of what’s in season throughout the year.

Spring (March-May)

As the weather warms, Okinawa’s fields come alive with fresh greens and early tropical fruits.

Vegetables: Shima rakkyo (Okinawan shallots) is at peak season, alongside leafy greens like Shimana (Okinawan mustard greens).

Fruits: Pineapple season kicks off in May, and early shikuwasa (a small, tangy citrus) begins appearing.

Summer (June-August)

Summer is peak season for Okinawa’s most iconic produce, from vibrant tropical fruits to heat-loving vegetables.

Vegetables: Goya (bitter melon), nabera (sponge gourd), nsunaba (leafy summer vegetable), and fuchiba (Okinawan mugwort).

Fruits: Mango, passion fruit, dragon fruit, and pineapple reach their sweetest and juiciest state.

Autumn (September – November)

As the summer heat fades, citrus fruits take center stage while root vegetables start making an appearance.

Vegetables: Late-season goya and nabera remain available, while daikon radish and other cool-weather vegetables start appearing.

Fruits: Mango season winds down, and citrus varieties like shikuwasa and tankan oranges become the stars.

Winter (December-February)

Winter brings crisp greens and hearty root vegetables to Okinawa’s markets, along with sweet citrus to brighten the season.

Vegetables: Shima ninjin (Okinawan yellow carrots), shima rakkyo, Napa cabbage, spinach, handama (purple-green leafy vegetable), and tanmu (taro root).

Fruits: Tankan oranges, shikuwasa, and locally grown greenhouse strawberries.

Where to Find the Freshest Picks

For the best seasonal produce, check out Okinawa’s michi no eki (roadside stations) and farmer’s markets. Grocery stores also stock local harvests, but market stalls often have fresher, more affordable options straight from the fields.
